Underwater

My first theme in my art journey. I have always been fascinated by life underwater, there is so much we simply do not know and will not ever know.

This Underwater Phase marks the beginning of my paintings around May 2020 until the “Then I Remember” painting of April 2021.

Below are the paintings for under this theme, accompanied by the 3 words I have been given by the recipient of the painting, and a short description of the story.

“What have I done?”

(Languid, Bereft, and Machine) - June 2020

This is the story of a jellyfish who turns away from the light to enter a portal into the unknown darkness. The jellyfish comes out of the portal as a lizard. The lizard is laying languidly on a branch, its mind flashing through its new knowledge and wisdom it obtained through its transformation.

The lizard becomes more sentient and can see their place in the universe, see its former life as a jellyfish, see its place on the tree, and see the tree in different ways.

Bereft of mortality, the lizard still carries the immortal ability of the Turritopsis dohrnii, the Immortal Jellyfish. The lizard is trapped in a state of profound self-awareness for eternity and reflects on what might have been if the jellyfish headed towards the light of the anglerfish (teeth on bottom left corner) instead of heading into the dark portal.

This is a lot for the mind of the lizard.

“Time”

(Flow, Mutualism, and Luminous)- Dec 2020

The story of Time begins where a dragon is born into water. The dragon grows during the discovery of fire, and ages in the era of technology. Finding eternal rest in the void that encapsulates all the Times of Life we have ever known.

The dragon is merely flowing through the phases of mankind, in and out of the duality of the known and the unknown.

“Raison d’etre"

(Noise, Responsibility, and Monotony)- Dec 2020

Location: UK

An Octopus Senator (purple robes were worn by Senators in Ancient Rome) has been tasked to drum the Stapes (ear bone of a human) to the Cochlea for all else to hear. The unfortunate and difficult job for an octopus, who by biological design have no ears like humans.

“Crazy but Reserved”

(Crazy but Reserved)- June 2020

A depiction of a nature reserve where mankind is only just beginning to crazy things to it.

“Alone”

(Ocean, Solitude, and Femininity)- Oct 2020

This is a Lionfish resting on a seaweed throne, under the light on the universe. Alone.

Lionfish are solitary animals.
